Nicobar Pigeon Hawk-tail Whisk

Pigeons… They’re often underrated, but this truly diverse, beautiful and fascinating family of birds is distributed across the world and includes 352 species.

Pigeons produce milk for their young, can take off almost vertically, see colors and hear sounds humans cannot, and navigate across hundreds of miles using mechanisms scientists still don’t fully understand.

The Nicobar pigeon — one of nature’s most dazzling birds AND the closest living relative of the dodo, making it one of the more ancient bird species still here today. They live on remote island chains from India to the Solomon Islands, flying dozens of kilometers across open ocean to find food.

They forage on the ground, cracking open hard seeds with a powerful muscular gizzard, making it a vital forest seed disperser. Nomadic and social, it nests in large colonies on small uninhabited islands that keep predators at bay.
