Cape May Warbler Turkey-wing Whisk

I know I may be hanging on to this broom for a while….whoever this flies to is probably my bird nerdy soulmate. It is a select few Witches Who Watch Birds that will hear the sweet sweet call of this Whisk! 🥰

In truth, I wasn’t planning this broom AT ALL. As I was laying out broom corn for the Yellow Warbler it seemed like the colors reminded me of a different bird. And then I realized it was THIS beauty! ⬇️⬇️⬇️ I just watched a webinar about spring migration and this lovely was featured.

A Cape May Warbler- I have never seen or heard one of these in the wild. They basically migrate from the Caribbean to the boreal forests of Canada to nest. Only stopping over in the US during spring and fall migration. With a few very far north exceptions, they do not nest in the United States.

This colorful warbler is super closely tied to the hatch of Spruce Budworm Moths…well the caterpillars actually. So if it’s a good year for caterpillars, it’s a good year for Cape May Warblers. 🐛🙌🏼

In learning more about this species, I found this FASCINATING fact! Their tongues are different from all other warblers. They are curled and semi-tubular so that they can take advantage of nectar from flowers in their wintering grounds. They may even use hummingbird feeders!

So after learning more about them I have come up with these correspondence for this whisk:

💛Resilience and Trust- know that if times seem tough right now, they will inevitably improve. Just like some years are great for caterpillars and others are not… simply wait for opportunities and abundance to arrive and then take full advantage.

🤎Innovation and Resourcefulness- each of us has special characteristics that set us apart from those around us. Consider what yours might be and how you can use them to take advantage of the opportunities and resources around you. Their unique tongues allow them to exploit a resource that no other warblers can- nectar!

🖤Beauty and Joy, their bright colors and cheerful songs remind us to celebrate the gifts all around us and to be a loud and vocal gift to others.
