Let’s talk about pigeons….

I love them so much! One of the highlights of my recent and first visit to NYC was watching the pigeons.

This bird is so underrated and undervalued. In some of the most urban landscapes that feel the most domesticated and farthest from Nature, pigeons are a fascinating reminder that Nature is all around us and some species find a way to adapt and exploit the harsh landscapes we leave in our wake as humans.

Long-lived (up to 31 years!) and super intelligent- pigeons have been a companion to humans for millennia. In fact they have been partners, pets, and muses for scientists like Darwin.

They have an uncanny ability to find their way home, hence the term homing pigeon. Homing pigeons were regularly used in World War 2 to deliver messages that saved lives. They fly at an average of 60 miles per hour and can find their way home over vast distances (as far as 1100 miles!). They use the earth’s magnet field to navigate and it’s thought they may use sounds and smell too.

They mate for life, and despite their half-assed nest building skills, they are doting parents. The male chooses the nesting spot and brings the females sticks and stems to arrange into a flimsy nest that becomes more sturdy over time, since they nest in the same place every year. Both parents incubate the eggs. And did you know they make a milky substance they feed to their young?!
