I can’t honestly imagine a better endorsement of this Steller’s Jay broom which has been added to my site (🔗 in bio)…
Keep watching!
In the last 18 months of living here, I have seen the Steller’s Jay only a handful of times and all in the last week. That’s why I had to make a broom in his honor of course! I believe he approves!
Steller’s Jays are a member of the Corvid family, like ravens and crows. Thus they are wicked smart, have great communication skills, and are focused on and devoted to their family and their tribe.
While they can be loud and raucous with their sharp grating calls, they also can be silent and graceful movers through the forest canopy as they search for food and treasure. They have a diverse diet and they think ahead to the lean times of winter by caching food to return to during the winter.
They are accomplished mimics and frequently pretend to be red-tailed hawks in order to frighten other birds away from and coveted food source.
Steller’s Jays build sturdy nests that include mud, which is unusual for a Corvid. They are aggressive in their defense of their nests and work together to mob predators much larger than themselves.
Residents of the forests of the western United States, I associate them with the earth and with growth. But also with shadows and secrets that only dark forests can hold.
