🖤💛🤍 Finches don’t get a lot of attention in the bird world, but I find them to be cheerful visitors to feeders with a delightful chatty song. And they really are quite colorful! 🔊 Sound on to hear their happy song!

This whisk was inspired by the American Goldfinch. Of all the finches, I think of “right-timing” with the Goldfinch. They feed their chicks exclusively seeds. Which is different than most seed-eating birds. Typically all birds start their chicks out with a diet high in

protein, mostly from insects.

But Goldfinches do not start their chicks on a diet of insects. So they time their nesting to coincide with the peak of seed abundance in late summer. They delay nesting until July in Idaho, thus when their eggs hatch there are copious amounts of seed available, particularly thistle seed which is a favorite.

In the Celtic tradition, finches were fairy birds. Their song was a message between worlds.

Here’s some fun folklore about finches:

🗞️A finch singing at your window foretells good news.

💵 A finch entering your home brings financial blessing.

🔉A chaffinch (a European species) calling in the morning calls in the rain.

☀️ And then there’s the goldfinch — sun-colored, summer-blessed — a living symbol of warmth, abundance, and the returning light.

The smallest creatures often carry the oldest wisdom, if we stop long enough to listen. 🌿👂🏻
