Rufous Hummingbirds can be the biggest little bullies at a feeder. But I like to reframe that to mean “they are so good at setting boundaries and defending them”.🤣

Having more than one hummingbird feeder (preferably not within sight of each other or a good distance apart) can help ensure that everyone gets a chance to drink.

Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards (even upside down for a short stint). To power this agility they have double jointed wings that they can flap up to 60 times per SECOND! That’s incredible.

Like all hummingbirds, Rufous have a super high metabolism with their heart rates reaching up to 1200 beats per minute in flight. I can’t even wrap my mind around that. When the temperature drops or food is scarce they can go into torpor (a kind of temporary hibernation) to conserve energy. Their heart rate drops to 50 beats per minute and their metabolism slows by 95% during that time.

Similar to Calliope Hummingbirds, Rufous are unique to the Northwestern US and Canada- being highly associated with coniferous forests and mountain meadows during nesting season. In the winters they travel over 2000 miles to Mexico and Central America.

Hummingbirds bring some important messages we should listen to. Might does NOT make right. They are tiny, feisty defenders of what is theirs. They are associated with JOY, BEAUTY, and LOVE. And remind us to savor the sweetness that life offers. They are resilient and adaptable. Agile and fearless. Hummingbird energy can add swiftness to your intentions and remind you of beauty in your daily life.
